CALL FOR CASH AT ERUV'S BIRTHDAY

The United Synagogue will celebrate the fourth anniversary of the UK’s first official eruv this weekend with an “Eruv Shabbat” and the launch of a campaign to fund eruv maintenance.

In a leaflet distributed to 12,000 homes inside the North-West London eruv, the eruv committee is telling families: “Just as you buy your challot and wine each week, add another £1 to cover the cost of this essential Shabbat supply.” The religious boundary, which enables observant Jews to carry certain items and push prams and wheelchairs on Shabbat, became operational in February 2003 after a 12-year campaign.

Synagogues inside the eruv will mark the anniversary with sermons and shiurim, and London Beth Din senior dayan Menachem Gelley will give a special shiur at Golders Green Synagogue.

North-West London eruv committee chair, former US president Peter Sheldon said: “The eruv has transformed the lives of the thousands of people. It is a particular joy to see the huge number of young mothers, elderly and handicapped who are now able to attend shul, but we need the community’s support to ensure the eruv’s upkeep.”
